BAX·ADVISORY

Cases & Confessions — Episode 8 · August 7, 2026

How do you assess pre-acquisition risk before buying art or design?

Casi & Confessioni — Episode 8. An AI asks the questions; Bax, a dealer for 25 years, gives the answers. The stories are true; names and places are not. Bax — Andrea Bassoli (@bomberbax) · Dealer for 25 years.

Q.01 Where is a bad purchase actually priced?

At the exit. Never at the moment you pay. You buy an object with a weak attribution, tired surface, difficult transport, or a market that has seen it too often. The seller calls it a detail. The next buyer calls it a discount. That discount is the price of your mistake.

Q.02 Can a low price make the risk acceptable?

Sometimes. But low is not a number by itself. I look at what remains after condition, attribution, logistics, certification, and the likely selling channel have taken their share. If the margin survives all that, I can look closer. If it only works in the seller’s story, I leave it there.

Q.03 What is the most expensive mistake before an acquisition?

Falling in love before buying. Once you want the piece, every warning becomes negotiable. A missing detail becomes patina. An uncertain name becomes a possibility. A difficult exit becomes somebody else’s problem. The eye sees the object. The trade sees the bill waiting behind it.

The principle

The price you pay is only the first invoice; risk sends the rest later.

Related questions

Can you assess acquisition risk from photographs?

Photos can rule out obvious problems. They cannot settle condition, surface, scale, construction, or the details that move a price.

Is a certificate enough to remove the risk?

No. Certification is a toll gate, not the destination. The object still needs to stand on its own.

Is pre-acquisition advisory useful only for major purchases?

No. It matters whenever a mistake would trap capital, time, or storage.

All’uscita.

A volte.
